United States travel days: admission, tax and citizenship

US admission duration, federal tax residence and naturalization presence are separate systems. A visa’s expiry does not state the admitted-until date. The IRS weighted test does not control immigration status, and naturalization has its own physical-presence and continuous-residence rules.

Admission duration

CBP determines the authorized stay at entry. Review the admitted-until date or duration-of-status notation in the official record rather than calculating a universal visitor allowance.

Federal tax presence

The IRS substantial presence test weights countable days across three calendar years. Exempt-individual days, exceptions and treaty claims require separate review.

Naturalization

USCIS applies basis-specific physical-presence and continuous-residence requirements. Keep trips and long absences available for review instead of transferring an IRS total into a citizenship calculation.

Keep records by purpose

Save the I-94 admission record, tax-presence working papers and citizenship trip evidence separately. Reconcile each timeline against the responsible authority’s record instead of assuming one federal day total transfers to another system.
